The PATH Foundation is enhancing the downtown bridge that connects Atlanta’s east and west. The pedestrian path will link existing trails and provide stadium access for the 2019 Super Bowl. In partnership with Signature Design and Perez Planning + Design, this iconic landmark and its interpretive reader rail honor a great mayor of Atlanta. This human-scale project is dedicated to Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr., who led the city through the turbulent 1960s.

In many ways, Mayor Allen’s story is the story of Atlanta: one of civic pride, major transitions, and cooperative leadership. He embraced the radical shifts of the decade and implemented moderate social policies, securing Atlanta’s reputation as a modern Southern metropolis.

In addition to months of research, writing, and content gathering, I also designed the style guide for the interpretive reader rail along the bridge while freelancing with Signature Design.

Over the turbulent waters of the 1960s,
Ivan Allen was a human bridge from the Old South to the new in Atlanta.
