THE STORY

The initial lockdowns during spring 2020 were a scary time for all of us. My main outlet for anxiety was my favorite hobby, gardening, and soon I noticed I had plenty of extra seedlings. So, I set them out on the sidewalk with a quick sign that said “Take some flower and bean seedlings to brighten your garden”. They were gone by the morning, and that’s when I realized I was on to something.

I painted a larger, more permanent sign, and grew excited about the ides of a modern victory garden and how it could serve my neighbors.

After a few months of distributing seedlings during our national quarantine, in May 2020 I was interviewed about the Victory Garden project by Peachtree Corners Magazine as part of a five-piece series on “Stories to Brighten Our Spirits”.

I owe a huge thanks to Sonim Nosrat, author of Salt Fat Acid Heat, for her Q&A interview on The Splendid Table in early April 2020: she’s gave me the name “Victory Garden” to describe this community-scale pandemic survival project.

And now for 2021, the newly-installed Little Free Library for Books and Seeds

My mom constructed the Little Free Library, and I designed and painted the exterior. The top shelf is stocked with books, the middle with seeds and gardening information, and the bottom shelf with mutual aid items. Also check out the street-facing mural painted by me and Sam Markus! (If the landlord asks, it was like this when I found it…)
